In anticipation of Motown’s 51st Anniversary next month, we’re breaking down some of the labels most iconic artists and albums throughout time. It was just about 51 years ago, that Berry Gordy, music industry veteran took out a $800 loan from his family to launch Motown Records in Detroit.

Since its creation, Motown has birthed the careers of many legendary greats such as Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves and the Vandella’s and Tammi Terrll, all who have made their impact on music history, paving the way for today’s r&b champions like Usher, Ne-Yo and Melanie Fiona.
