As summer gets rolling, people start heading to the beach. If you are like I, summertime and time spent on the beach means time during which you can read without any sort of real time constraint or guilt. So, since books are my passion and obsession, here are some books to read this summer:
1. Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain
Set during the Dubya administration, Billy Lynn and his fellow Marines are the heroes of a vicious battle in Iraq. Amid exuberant American patriotism, the devil dogs are set to be the centerpiece of a Dallas Cowboys halftime show.
2. Tomato Red by Daniel Woodrell
Following the award-winning film adaption of Daniel Woodrell’s Winter’s Bone, several more of the author’s bracing backcountry crime novels have just been reissued in paperback.
3. The Dog Stars by Peter Heller
In the mood for a little post-apocalyptic action, a la The Walking Dead? Check out Peter Heller’s debut novel about a lone plague survivor living in an airplane hangar.
4. To the Last Breath: A Memoir of Extremes by Francis Slakey
Francis Slakey recounts the true story of how he went from teaching physics at Georgetown University to surfing waves in every ocean and climbing the Seven Summits—the highest peaks on each continent.
